Japanese swords are developed uniquely in Japan from ancient times to the early modern period, with its roots appearing from the Heian period onwards. With the rise of the samurai class and the increase in warfare, the demand for swords increased, and the manufacturing techniques evolved, giving Japanese swords their unique characteristics.
Then, at the end of the Edo period, under the influence of Western firearms, the role of the Japanese sword shifted from a military to a ceremonial one.
Today, the Japanese sword is highly regarded as a traditional craft and many swordsmiths have passed on their skills. In this way, the Japanese sword remains a crystallisation of culture and technology that has not lost its appeal.
